The Intersection

Where Public Health Meets AI

Most AI firms don't understand public health. Most public health consultants don't understand AI. We're building a team that lives at the intersection—where real impact happens.

We need people who can translate between data scientists and epidemiologists. Who can build AI governance frameworks that actually work in government. Who can train public health staff on AI literacy without the jargon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Careers at F&T Labs

Do I need public health experience to work at F&T Labs?

Yes. We specifically hire people who have worked in governmental public health—local, state, tribal, or federal health agencies. This isn't just a preference; it's core to who we are. Our tagline is "By Public Health, For Public Health" because we believe the best solutions come from people who've lived the reality. You understand the budgets, the politics, the legacy systems, and the mission that keeps you going anyway. That experience is invaluable and can't be taught.

What do you mean by "governmental public health"?

We prioritize people who have worked for US governmental agencies—local health departments, state health departments, tribal health agencies, or federal agencies like CDC, HRSA, or CMS. While working for a nonprofit in public health or a hospital is admirable work, we specifically value the lived experience of those who have worked in governmental settings. Government public health has unique challenges: civil service systems, public accountability, legislative oversight, and serving everyone in a jurisdiction regardless of ability to pay. If you've navigated those realities, you bring something our clients need.

Do you hire fully remote employees?

Yes! We're a remote-first company with team members across the US. Most roles are fully remote with occasional travel for client engagements, training delivery, or team gatherings. We believe great work happens when people have flexibility and trust. Some roles may require specific location for client site work—this will be noted in the job posting.

How can I stand out as a candidate?

Show us evidence of your work. A portfolio really stands out—whether that's projects you've led, tools you've built, trainings you've developed, or problems you've solved. We want to see how you think and what you've accomplished, not just your job titles. For AI roles, demonstrate that you understand responsible AI implementation for government—not just what's technically possible, but what's appropriate for public health agencies.

What's it like working at a woman-owned public health firm?

Our leadership team includes former health department staff who experienced the challenges of public health work firsthand. That shapes everything about our culture: we prioritize sustainable pace over burnout, we value diverse perspectives, and we build in flexibility because we know life happens. We're trauma-informed not just in our client work, but in how we treat our team.

What AI skills are most valuable for public health careers?

The most valuable skills combine technical AI knowledge with understanding of government context. This includes: AI governance and policy development, prompt engineering and LLM implementation, understanding HIPAA and data privacy requirements, change management for AI adoption, and ability to train non-technical audiences on AI literacy. You don't need to be a machine learning researcher—we need people who can implement AI responsibly in real-world public health settings.

How do I get started in public health informatics?

Public health informatics sits at the intersection of public health, data science, and information technology. Entry paths include: MPH programs with informatics concentrations, health IT certifications (like CAHIMS), transitioning from health department data/IT roles, or moving from clinical informatics to population health. We recommend building skills in data analysis, understanding surveillance systems, and getting familiar with standards like HL7 and FHIR. Most importantly—get experience at a health department first.

Do you offer internships or entry-level positions?

We occasionally offer internships and entry-level positions, particularly for MPH students or recent graduates with strong technical skills who have had practicums or internships at health departments. These positions are posted on our job board when available. Join our AI Community of Practice to stay connected and be notified of opportunities.

What benefits does F&T Labs offer?

We offer competitive compensation, health/dental/vision insurance, 401(k), generous PTO, professional development budget, flexible remote work, and the intangible benefit of mission-driven work that actually makes a difference in community health. Specific benefits details are shared during the interview process.

What are AI careers in public health?

AI careers in public health combine artificial intelligence expertise with public health knowledge to improve community health outcomes. These roles include AI policy advisors who help health departments develop responsible AI governance frameworks, AI trainers who teach public health staff to use AI tools safely, data scientists building predictive models for disease surveillance, and consultants implementing AI solutions for case management and workflow automation. It's a growing field as health departments adopt AI while navigating privacy, equity, and accuracy concerns unique to government settings.

How is AI being used in public health agencies?

Public health agencies are using AI for document drafting and summarization, chatbots for public inquiries, data analysis and visualization, disease outbreak prediction, automating routine administrative tasks, and improving case management workflows. The key challenge is implementing AI responsibly—ensuring HIPAA compliance, addressing algorithmic bias, maintaining public trust, and building staff capacity to use these tools effectively. Health departments need people who understand both the technology and the unique context of government public health work.

What is the job outlook for AI in public health?

The job outlook for AI in public health is strong and growing. CDC's Data Modernization Initiative is driving significant investment in data and AI capabilities across state and local health departments. As health agencies modernize their data infrastructure and adopt AI tools, they need professionals who can bridge the gap between technology and public health practice. Roles in AI governance, AI training, public health informatics, and data science are in high demand—especially for candidates with actual government public health experience.
